The Fall 2017 luncheon was held on October 11th.
This luncheon featured comments by current South High Principal Ray Aponte accompanied by two current South High students: Marie Stebbings and Mohamed Salad. Marie serves as Student Council President, and Mohamed as Chair of the Muslim Student Alliance.
Marie was born in Korea and adopted as a baby by a Minneapolis family. Mohamed came from Somalia at the age of 5 not speaking any English. Both students talked about their opportunities and experiences at South. Both are taking college-level coursework and, when they graduate from South, will have at least 1 year of college already behind them. They definitely are on their way to being leaders of tomorrow!
Ray offered his appreciation of the example set by two former Foundation board members pictured above: George Dahl, former South High principal and one of the founding members of the Foundation; and Harold Benson, long-time board member and activist for the Foundation and South High. Ray said that every principal in Minneapolis knows the work and dedication George and Harold have demonstrated to educating the students at South. And Ray added that he aspires to the gain the reputation of and make the impact of a George and Harold.
Generally speaking ...
Each features a guest speaker - but more importantly, the chance to meet up with old classmates and enjoy conversation over a meal.
Although we call the luncheon a fund-raising event, we really just hope to break even financially. The luncheons are primarily about renewing old friendships and making new ones. And, of course, keeping up-to-date with the Foundation and South High through the speakers.
The next luncheon will occur in the fall of 2017. Details will be posted here.
We hope to see you at the next luncheon!
We depend on volunteers to coordinate the luncheon. Visit the Opportunities page if this interests you! This luncheon's volunteer team was led by Judy Jungwirth with help from
