Want the background?
Contributions, donations, and fundraising activities provide money to support the students at South High. The Foundation helps fund projects and activities that are not covered by district or state funds. Reductions in state and federal funding make the Foundation a resource for teachers. Teachers with an idea for a project, class or activity that will directly benefit current South students can write a two-page Grant Application to briefly explain their idea and request funding.
The Foundation’s Grants Committee meets monthly to review the grant applications and decides which applications to fund based on:
- the number of students served,
- the amount of money needed, and
- the goals of the project.
Foundation grants help fund a wide range of programs and projects including:
- Academic programs such as All Nations Program Cultural Exploration project
- Fine Arts such as the student art show at Modus Locus gallery and Theater Department stage productions
- Athletics such as strength and conditioning coach for all student athletes to use for weight training
- Extracurricular activities such as a the YMCA Model UN and field trips to a professional printmaker and the Eagle Bluff Environmental Center
- Support services such as incentives to get students to get to school every day and be on time for classes and computer equipment for classroom LANS the students help build.
The photos above show the 2019 spring musical "Seussical" and the new tuba, both supported by Foundation grants. (There were many fewer demands on the Foundation's funds from March 2020 through June 2021 due to the pandemic.
During the 2021 school year, the Foundation made over $55,000 in grants funding.

The Source of the Funds
You Can Help
Your donation can help fund programs for South students. You can make either a donation to the South High Foundation general fund or a dedicated donation to help pay for a particular project you want to support. For instance, one South graduate really enjoyed being on the Debate Team. He credits teacher and Debate coach Doug Davis for helping him build his confidence, learn public speaking, and develop clear thinking skills – all of which aided his successful career as an attorney. The appreciative graduate donated funds to specifically cover the costs for the South High Debate Team traveling to out-of-state tournaments in Illinois and Iowa. Without the donation, there would not have been enough money to cover the costs of the tournaments and the Debate Team would have been limited to a few local competitions.
