One of the cornerstones of the South High Foundation is our grant program. Grants are used to fund any variety of activities for South High students that, particularly in light of the current funding environment, they might not be able to participate in otherwise.

Over the years, our grants program has helped build the South High community, including bringing hands-on practicum into science classes, funding a clay wheel for pottery classes, and building a new and improved Les Barnard Field.

How to Request a Grant

We no longer accept paper submissions. Please proceed to our updated electronic Grant Application here. Please fill out all of the required entries and upload your budget and report from the previous year, if applicable.

Please note: The signed and completed grant application must reach the Foundation by the 1st of the month to be considered at the next Grants Committee Meeting. The Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month during the school year. For example, a signed grant application received on September 13 will be reviewed at the October meeting. A signed application received on September 17 will be reviewed at the November committee meeting.

Tips for a Grant Application

Be specific in stating the goals, the number of student participating, and explaining how you will measure the impact of the project.
Tell the story – briefly explain why this project is important to you and how it will help students.
Include a budget and details. Show the total cost of the project and the amount you want the Foundation grant to cover. If you are asking for funds from another source name the source and the amount. Lack of budget detail is the most common reason for delay or a decision not to fund a grant application.
Apply early for two reasons.
- The Foundation does not cover expenses that were made before the grant was approved.
- Grant funds are limited. When the grants budget is expended there are no additional grants approved for the fiscal year.
Talk to the principal. The grant application must be signed by the principal to be considered.

Grants Committee Review

The Foundation’s Grants Committee will review the application and determine whether to fund the project. The committee may ask for additional information. If you would like to make a presentation to the committee about the project, please contact the Foundation office to make arrangements. Presentations are brief and limited to 10 minutes.

You will be notified by email about the committee’s decision approximately one week after the committee meeting, around the third Wednesday of the month. The committee may fund your request in full, provide partial funding or decline to fund the project.

How Grant Payments are Made

When you’ve been informed your grant will be funded by the Foundation, you may spend the funds authorized by the grant. There are two ways to make payments with grant funds.

Purchase the materials or services specified in the grant and get a receipt for your payment. Print out a Payment Request Form(opens in new tab), attach your receipt(s), and sign the form. Please make a copy of the completed form for your records. Place the form in the Foundation mail box in the Main Office at South or mail the form and receipts to South High Foundation, 3131 19th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55407. The Foundation will prepare a check made out to you to reimburse you for the expenses. It take 10-14 days after we receive the Check Request From and receipts to process the payment and mail you a check.
Have the vendor providing the materials or services send you an itemized invoice. Print out a Check Request Form, attach the invoice, and sign the form. Click here to download the form. Please make a copy of the invoice and completed form for your records. Place the form in the Foundation mail box in the Main Office at South or mail the form and receipts to South High Foundation, 3131 19th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55407. The Foundation will prepare a check made out to the vendor to pay the invoice. It take 10-14 days after we receive the Check Request From and receipts to process the payment and mail the check.

Payment to an Individual

Please note if you are requesting a payment to a person for services (i.e coaching, theater costume design, teaching a seminar, etc.) the person must complete a W9 form and send it to the Foundation. Click here to download the W9 form. Click here for IRS Form W9. The completed W9 must be at the Foundation before a check can be processed. The Foundation does not withhold taxes but does report payments to the IRS as required by law.
